Mary Jane Fandrich

You have given Midori and Eric great honour for coming from so many places and so far. We have my uncle, my father's youngest brother William Saadeh here and his wife Alice. They have come from the United States. And my cousin John Azraq and his wife Samiya have come from London, and Grace and Raja Hajjar my cousins have come from Lebanon. We are very very pleased that they have made so much effort to join us tonight.

When God created the world, and created man, He said that it is not good that man should be alone. So He made man to sleep and took a rib from man and made a woman to be a helper, suitable for man. So God determined from the beginning that the human family would be the foundation of all human society.

Today we have seen the formation of a new family unit and have presented it to God for His blessing. The chance of Eric and Midori meeting were very little. Eric, born the fifth child in a city in Canada, Midori the first child in a town in Japan (Editor's correction: Midori is actually the second child). The chance of their meeting was very small but God determined to bring Midori to put her trust in Jesus Christ, and then to bring her to our family. I rejoice that Eric has been given such a good wife.

Midori is mature, self-confident, and capable. She is a practicing pharmacist. She determined on her own to travel to Britain to study English, and after a year proceeded on to Canada. She arrived the day after Roger's wedding and the great snowstorm of January 2, 1999. She thought that was normal winter weather in Canada! She came to Knox Church to study English and to study in the Japanese Bible study. She came with others to our home for Christmas celebration. Then she came to Christina and Stefan's home and was very happy with our family. Soon she was in the kitchen with me learning how to make cakes and puddings and teaching me how to make very rich Miso soup.

I am happy she is joining our family. We are all so happy to meet her good mother and father and her aunts and her uncles and her grandmother. We are happy that Eric has found such good friends, so I propose a toast to Midori - Kanpai!
