Whereas all we
needed to bring for the digital camcorder was some
extra tapes, the digital camera was a different
story. In order to take pictures with a digital
camera you need RAM. Lots of RAM. The problem is
that for my camera 64MB of RAM costs about $125.,
and this is good for about 80 pictures.
(Approximately 800KB per digital photograph) You
can use RAM over and over again if you dump the
pictures somewhere else. Consequently, for us to be
able to use the camera without worrying about
buying more RAM, we brought the laptop (and cables,
and adapters, voltage converter, spare batteries,
chargers, etc.) along for the ride. BUT this
allowed me to play with the camera to my heart's
content (...and Midori's dismay).

A special piece
of equipment I brought along was an underwater
housing for use with my digital camera. This
housing let us take photos of all the undersea
world when we went diving
at Tulamben
in the north of Bali.
A word about
digital cameras underwater: they have their quirks.
First of all, there is a lag between pressing the
shutter and taking the picture. The consequence is
that we took many pictures of the tails of fishes
that had "high tailed" it out of our way as we
tried to photograph them. The second thing was the
"auto white balance" didn't have a setting for
"blue" light instead of "white". Consequently the
camera was constantly second-guessing what we were
trying to do. Next time we will have had some
practice and we should get a better set of
shots.
